Sparkles are so fun and pretty on your nails...
Except they are a biaatch to remove. We've probably all been there scrubbing at our nails with a mountain of cotton pads building up. Well I randomly came across a couple blogs that show you a fret free method of taking off the thick coats of sparkly stuff on your nails.
It seemed too good to be true so I wanted to test it for myself....
So onto the tutorial ... these hideously chipped nails are ready for a fresh manicure!
What you'll need:
+ 3 cotton pads
+ scissors
+ strip of aluminum foil
+ nail polish remover
So what you do to prep is cut your strip of foil into ten rectangles.
Now cut your cotton pads into quarters...I had a picture but I some how deleted it! If you have 3 cotton pads you will have half a pad left over to use for touching up.
Now soak your cotton pad quarter in nail polish remover, place it on your nail and wrap it in the foil. The whole point of the foil is to secure the soaked cotton over the nail without any evaporation.
Once you have done one hand (or both if you have good hand eye coordination), listen to your favorite song, or do lunges or anything to occupy yourself for 5 minutes. Let those sparkles soak!
Ok, now that you've waited enough, you can remove the foil finger tips. You'll probably need a spare cotton pad to remove the residue of loose sparkles on the sides of your nail...that left over half cotton pad has come in handy! Is it just me, or is anyone else super stingy when it comes to cotton pads? I really hate wasting.
Your nails should look like this. I massage the aluminum tips as I'm removing it off my nail so that the cotton pad picks up as much sparkles as possible.
All in all, this method really works! Pretty neat stuff :D

How cool! That is a great way and I'll give it a try, since I did purchased some glitter nail polish!
ReplyDeleteWoah! So cool!!
ReplyDeletei love sparkles to, but it takes me forever to get it off my nails.. im going to try this method out. thank you
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment :) Im glad u like them...
ReplyDeleteBtw I love your blog! And the nail colour, I've never purchased glitter nail varnish but I'll be givin it a try it looks amazing on your nails! x

can you just put latex gloves on over the cotton pads?
ReplyDeleteyou just need something to hold the cotton pads from shifting off the nail. i would imagine it a pain to put on gloves while holding all the cotton pads in place though.
ReplyDeleteThe nail polish will cause the gloves to melt.
DeleteI am SO glad you posted this! I spent forever this past weekend trying to scrape glittery polish off my toenails. Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteDoes it affect acrylic nails?
ReplyDeleteit would probably eat the acrylic and any other nail polish that is on the nail. i wouldnt advise it...
DeleteBrilliant! Now I can crack out my OPI Burlesque polishes again without the thought of the pain it is to remove... Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteNow I will wear sparkle more often...I did it and wow it worked amazingly! Thank You!!
ReplyDeleteI usually take the cap of my polish remover and just soak a finger in it at a time and it comes off pretty good. always wanted to try this!!!
ReplyDeleteCool story bro. Tell it again.
DeleteBecause adding that was super necessary, dick.
DeleteBe nice!
DeleteWow..glad I came across this..THANKS! Just 3 days ago It took me forever to try and get this glitter off my nails. Now I know for the next time..LOVE GLITTER on the nails =)
ReplyDeleteI usually use non-acetone nail polish remover and it works great for the glitter polish. Great tip, thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you, thank you! I was going out of my mind trying to get the polish off. Your way works like a charm.
ReplyDeleteI like this idea. I will try it! I normally use Pure Acetone and work really quickly ( it works really well) cause I know that it is BAD for your nails.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip! So good to know... though I may keep it to myself because I tell my boyfriend I HAVE to get a pedicure after glitter polish because it is almost impossible to get off myself. :)
ReplyDeleteJust tried this...taking off OPI's "Rainbow Connection"...worked GREAT! My nails came out perfectly clean! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteyou can also use this method to remove fake nails!
ReplyDeleteYou could always just pour some nail polish remover into a little bowl and put your fingers in it like they do at the salon. That way you don't have to waste the foil...
ReplyDeleteBut then you're wasting the remover, which is way more expensive than foil. Plus, you'll need to fill the bowl with marbles, then sit in one place while you dangle and wiggle your fingers around in the remover. Also, it usually takes way more than five minutes with the bowl soak method.
DeleteThis is brilliant! Thank you! I love BarryM nail varnish but it's always such a bugger to remove. Will def be giving this a try next time!
ReplyDeleteI just saw this on Pinterest. At first I thought that the picture was of duct tape on your fingers! I am so relieved that it is aluminum foil! Thanks for the great idea (I'll give this one a try, but not duct tape!)
ReplyDeleteWow...that is great...I have been avoiding using sparkly nail polish tho I do love it cos of it being a biatch to remove.... Gonna do this next time xx
ReplyDeleteI use this, but instead of cotton balls, I cut up squares of felt... that way you don't end up with strings of annoying cotton being stuck to your nails. Works like a charm... even on shellac nail polish!
ReplyDeleteI started doing the same thing with foil when I was taking off my Shellac, which is very difficult to take off also, and found that the Press n Seal wrap actually stays on better, you can wrap it tighter than foil.
ReplyDeleteShut the Front Door!! Thank you for the OP and for this post. I was avoiding both glitter and shellac because of how difficult they are to remove. Yay for geniouses like you fine ladies :)
DeleteI know I'm really bad at math, but...wouldn't cutting 2 cotton pads into quarters only make enough for 8 fingers?
ReplyDeleteedit: you need 2.5 cotton pads. lol and I graduated with a major in math. thats kind of embarrassing
DeleteThats why she said 3 cotten pads!!
DeleteThe person who spelled cotton "cotten" must have graduated with a major in English. ;)
DeleteThis also works for polishes such as bright or very saturated blues that usually stain the fingers-- apply the cotton as you describe, give it a chance to 'melt' and soak up most of the polish, then slide it off. Keeps you from ending up with blue fingers from scrubbing it off directly.
ReplyDeleteGOOD advice... must try!
ReplyDeleteI'm linking back to this post in my post tomorrow as a fellow beauty blogger! Love your tutorial!
ReplyDeleteGood idea.! Not even pure acetone will take off the glitter polish by itself, thanks for the idea.!!
ReplyDelete-Nail Addict.
This method would work for ANY nail polish, whether it has glitter or not, but glitter always seems to be the hardest to get rid of
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to repaint my toenails but I just couldn't get that last little but of nail polish off! I just tried this method and it all came right off! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI had my toenails painted with sparkly polish. I went back to get another pedicure and the lady tried to get the polish off with a file. It hurt!!!! This is great. I think I will print it off and take it to the nail salon!!
ReplyDeleteThis also works to remove the gel polish!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this tip. I will have to try it. I have always had such a time removing glitter polish. this seems much easier.
ReplyDeleteWow this works amazingly!!! Thanks soo much for the tip! I loveLoveLOVE glitter nail polish but its SUCH A PAIN to take off!!!
ReplyDeleteIf you just buy the 100% pure acetone nail polish remover it will take the glitter polish right off. It's more expensive than standard nail polish remover but it's worth it. It also removes artificial nails.
ReplyDeleteomg.....you have saved me life. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteQuestion, does this method cause your nails to become thin?
ReplyDeleteThis method is used for gel polish in the salons. It quickly removes the polish rather than soaking your hands in the acetone.
ReplyDeleteWow! I was just trying to remove sparkled from my toe nails 2 days ago. What a pain! Thanks so much! Will be trying this ASAP :)
ReplyDeleteI stopped using glitter nail polish because it is such a pain to remove. This sounds easy but isn't this bad for the nails? It is technically like soaking the nails, especially since the foil blocks evaporation. Have you noticed any difference on your nails?
ReplyDeletei love my glitter polish but it is such a pain to get off. thats why i never wear mine anymore. ill have to give this a try! thanks so much
ReplyDeletethis is how they remove shellac nail polish...
ReplyDeleteJust tried this, only I didn't have any foil so I put plastic sandwich bags over my toes (seriously)! It worked almost perfectly!!! Saves me from scrubbing and using a jackhammer!
ReplyDeletethank you!! i love sparkle nail polish, but i wear it as less as i can to avoid having to take it off. now i can wear it whenever and on all nails!! :)
ReplyDeleteVERY cool! I find myself not doing the sparkle as often as it's a flipping nightmare to remove. I've been letting them soak on each fingers but wasn't aware of the tin foil. Thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeleteSweet! im going to have to inform my friend on this! shes had the same sparkles on her toes for like a month because she cant get them off!! :P
ReplyDeleteLOL!
DeleteWOW! You have saved me so much time! I love using sparkles for designs and such things like that on my nails, but then when i go to remove it there's always some i cant get off and end up repainting it and having a bumpy spot on my nail! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for this!!!! :0))
ReplyDeleteThank you, Thank you, Thank you soooooo much for this post. What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteYou can also use this method to remove a salon gel polish manicure. No need to return to the salon to get them removed (I am not talking about the "fake nails" just the gel polish). Try wrapping your hands in plastic wrap and then stick them under a towel. Wait 15 minutes and the gel polish with come right off with no damage to your nail.
ReplyDeleteawesome!
ReplyDeleteIf you use a good quality polish remover, and lay the pad on your nail for a few seconds before "scrubbing" at the polish, it will come off anyway. It only takes me about 5-10 to remove gel polish- use acetone and wrap- WAIT- 5-10 minutes and it should just wipe away. Instead of rubbing the pad all over your nails, hold it on the nail a few seconds and then pull it toward the free edge and you don't get polish all over the skin. To stop acetone from drying the skin, rub a bit of Vaseline around the nail and cuticle. To get in corners or clean up boo boos, wrap cotton on a toothpick.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like it works but I really don't want to wait the 5 or 10 min with foil on my nails so I found on pintrest another way to remove the glitter nail polish.. You take just plain Elmer's white glue and paint it on your nails just like you would polish, let it dry completely , then apply your glitter polish and top coats.. When your ready to change it just use anything that has a slight point at the end and at the side of your nail just push a little on the polish and it will peel right off because of the glue.. I have used this a bunch of times and never had a problem with it and it hold up well too mine usually last for a week or so.. You can look it up on pintrest if you want to see it done..
ReplyDeleteThat is a great idea! Thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely check that out. You actually only need to wait a couple minutes, but it still is a bit of a hassle to prepare all the aluminum strips.
DeleteI love it dear. I love sparkly nail polish too! <3
ReplyDeleteVERY HELPFUL!

ReplyDeleteI tried this last night & it works great!!! took that stubborn glitter off in no time!
ReplyDeleteGina
ReplyDeletethanks for passing the word on about how to take that kind of polish off.
Wish i had known this when i was trying to be clever with glitter and nail polish months back :)
ReplyDeleteYou can also buy a bottle of 100% acetone nail polish remover from walmart for 2$ and it works better and quicker.
ReplyDeleteI just tried this on my toes and it worked. I didnt have to sit there and scrub. What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI am surely coming again for more contents of yours.
ReplyDeletenail wrap
Also, you can unravel a cotton ball and use pieces of that instead of cotton pads. I did this method and used literally half a cotton ball!!
ReplyDeleteOh and I forgot to mention... Did this without the foil. Took under five minutes total.
