Sparkles are so fun and pretty on your nails...
Except they are a biaatch to remove. We've probably all been there scrubbing at our nails with a mountain of cotton pads building up. Well I randomly came across a couple blogs that show you a fret free method of taking off the thick coats of sparkly stuff on your nails.
It seemed too good to be true so I wanted to test it for myself....
So onto the tutorial ... these hideously chipped nails are ready for a fresh manicure!
What you'll need:
+ 3 cotton pads
+ scissors
+ strip of aluminum foil
+ nail polish remover
So what you do to prep is cut your strip of foil into ten rectangles.
Now cut your cotton pads into quarters...I had a picture but I some how deleted it! If you have 3 cotton pads you will have half a pad left over to use for touching up.
Now soak your cotton pad quarter in nail polish remover, place it on your nail and wrap it in the foil. The whole point of the foil is to secure the soaked cotton over the nail without any evaporation.
Once you have done one hand (or both if you have good hand eye coordination), listen to your favorite song, or do lunges or anything to occupy yourself for 5 minutes. Let those sparkles soak!
Ok, now that you've waited enough, you can remove the foil finger tips. You'll probably need a spare cotton pad to remove the residue of loose sparkles on the sides of your nail...that left over half cotton pad has come in handy! Is it just me, or is anyone else super stingy when it comes to cotton pads? I really hate wasting.
Your nails should look like this. I massage the aluminum tips as I'm removing it off my nail so that the cotton pad picks up as much sparkles as possible.
All in all, this method really works! Pretty neat stuff :D

can you just put latex gloves on over the cotton pads?
ReplyDeleteyou just need something to hold the cotton pads from shifting off the nail. i would imagine it a pain to put on gloves while holding all the cotton pads in place though.

ReplyDeleteYou could always just pour some nail polish remover into a little bowl and put your fingers in it like they do at the salon. That way you don't have to waste the foil...
ReplyDeleteBut then you're wasting the remover, which is way more expensive than foil. Plus, you'll need to fill the bowl with marbles, then sit in one place while you dangle and wiggle your fingers around in the remover. Also, it usually takes way more than five minutes with the bowl soak method.

ReplyDeleteI use this, but instead of cotton balls, I cut up squares of felt... that way you don't end up with strings of annoying cotton being stuck to your nails. Works like a charm... even on shellac nail polish!
ReplyDeleteI started doing the same thing with foil when I was taking off my Shellac, which is very difficult to take off also, and found that the Press n Seal wrap actually stays on better, you can wrap it tighter than foil.

DeleteThis also works for polishes such as bright or very saturated blues that usually stain the fingers-- apply the cotton as you describe, give it a chance to 'melt' and soak up most of the polish, then slide it off. Keeps you from ending up with blue fingers from scrubbing it off directly.

ReplyDeleteIf you just buy the 100% pure acetone nail polish remover it will take the glitter polish right off. It's more expensive than standard nail polish remover but it's worth it. It also removes artificial nails.

ReplyDeleteThis method is used for gel polish in the salons. It quickly removes the polish rather than soaking your hands in the acetone.

ReplyDeleteI stopped using glitter nail polish because it is such a pain to remove. This sounds easy but isn't this bad for the nails? It is technically like soaking the nails, especially since the foil blocks evaporation. Have you noticed any difference on your nails?

ReplyDeleteJust tried this, only I didn't have any foil so I put plastic sandwich bags over my toes (seriously)! It worked almost perfectly!!! Saves me from scrubbing and using a jackhammer!

ReplyDeleteYou can also use this method to remove a salon gel polish manicure. No need to return to the salon to get them removed (I am not talking about the "fake nails" just the gel polish). Try wrapping your hands in plastic wrap and then stick them under a towel. Wait 15 minutes and the gel polish with come right off with no damage to your nail.

ReplyDeleteIf you use a good quality polish remover, and lay the pad on your nail for a few seconds before "scrubbing" at the polish, it will come off anyway. It only takes me about 5-10 to remove gel polish- use acetone and wrap- WAIT- 5-10 minutes and it should just wipe away. Instead of rubbing the pad all over your nails, hold it on the nail a few seconds and then pull it toward the free edge and you don't get polish all over the skin. To stop acetone from drying the skin, rub a bit of Vaseline around the nail and cuticle. To get in corners or clean up boo boos, wrap cotton on a toothpick.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like it works but I really don't want to wait the 5 or 10 min with foil on my nails so I found on pintrest another way to remove the glitter nail polish.. You take just plain Elmer's white glue and paint it on your nails just like you would polish, let it dry completely , then apply your glitter polish and top coats.. When your ready to change it just use anything that has a slight point at the end and at the side of your nail just push a little on the polish and it will peel right off because of the glue.. I have used this a bunch of times and never had a problem with it and it hold up well too mine usually last for a week or so.. You can look it up on pintrest if you want to see it done..
